No SIM Card Error Message

Since I had a hectic day, I thought I would post something I did awhile ago. Death Valley, March 2011

It has been a hectic day. When I woke up my iPhone had an error message, 'No SIM'. So I hard rebooted it and when I restarted it it still had the same message. So I went to AT&T (BTW - Thank goodness I am staying with my daughter in Issaquah and didn't have to drive 1.5 hours from Cle Elum) and they hard rebooted it and everything was fine...uhg. A little while later when I was talking to a student during her review, the phone went dead and once again gave me the error message.

Now, completely frustrated, I decided it was best to plug the phone into iTunes and synced it. The next step was to import all my current photos into Lightroom. ALWAYS good to have a backup at this point! Then I hard rebooted it, it worked for a bit and then failed again.

So I drove to the Apple store and I explained the problem. They ran a diagnostic test, found nothing obvious and then gave me a new phone. After setting up the phone with the few questions, we synced it to my contacts and everything seemed great...well for a minute. Next I new the same error message appeared, 'No SIM'.

With new iPhone in hand I walked down the hall in Bellevue Square to the AT&T store to get a new SIM card. They were very helpful by setting up my voice mail box and putting a screen protector on my new phone. So far so good as I have returned a few phone calls tonight without disruption or error messages.

So now all I have to do is resync it to my backup on iTunes tonight and in the morning, I hope to be up and running. Whew!

Photoshop Touch Review

Nepalese Village boys drinking warm milk

As the news about Adobe releasing the app Photoshop Touch was announced I had mixed emotions. I was excited to discover what the app would offer and curious to why the decision to save images at a low res was made.
This morning after it downloaded I tapped on the icon and was impressed to discover that Tutorials were available. After following along with a few, I decided to give it a try on some of my own images.
Just like any application, with so many features, I found it difficult to navigate at first. I found myself thinking how much it felt like processing with Photoshop CS5 on my computer even though I rarely process that way anymore. Currently, I am so use to processing with other applications that I felt I had to force myself to concentrate. I did however, with the help of the tutorials, learn how to navigate through the app's many features fairly quickly. However there is much more to learn and understand.
The question to why the decision to release this application as one that saves at a low res is very puzzling to me. Thankfully there are applications that do allow up resing for those of us who wish to print our images. However for posting the low res works just fine.

Yesterday it was mentioned that I am now a 'Pinner' on Pinterest, pinning various iPhone Photography items along with a few other interesting things. When learning the ropes I discovered that community boards can be created, so an idea.

Banteay Srei - Angkor Temple

There are many temples in Angkor some stand out more than others. The Banteay Srei was built in the 10 century and "it is said that the reliefs on this temple are so delicate that they could only have been carved by the hand of a woman."

It is relatively small compared to the other temples and well worth the 23 mile tuk tuk ride to see its delicate carvings. When I arrived it was just an hour before sunset, I was hoping to catch the 'golden' hour and crossing my fingers for less crowds. However when I arrived tour buses were still coming in and the temple surrounded by 'Chinese New Year' tourists. Trying not to be discouraged I set up my tripod right next to the rope surrounding the refined temples. While capturing a few panos, I was surprised and a bit irritated that some tourist were able to enter the roped area because they were walking into my image. Trying not to be discouraged I moved outside of the moat and captured the reflection of the temple.

When I returned inside I once again saw a few tourist inside of the ropes so I asked a guard how I could get inside the ropes too and if I had to pay extra to do so. He politely nodded and walked away leaving me to wonder if he understood my question. I saw him walk up to a older guard and I was hoping he was asking about permission for me to enter. When he reuturn he said, "Yes, $5" I glady paid him for the chance to get a closer look knowing that my 5 buck was going straight into the guards pocket, a tip and a big one for that part of the world.

Passenger View - Tuk Tuk - Cambodia

Tuk Tuk Ride in Siem Reap heading to Angkor Wat temples

The best way to travel as a tourist in Cambodia is by renting a tuk tuk and driver for the day. Both in Siem Reap and Phnom Phen the rate was $25 per day. You would get picked up at your hotel, driven to the locations of your choice during the day, and end the day back again to your hotel; it could be up to a 14 hour day. All day long the driver would just wait for you while you went to the various temples, restaurants, museums, roadside attraction, any where.

The day I arrived in Phnom Phen by bus the number of eager tuk tuk drivers was typically large. In January they outnumber the tourist by a large number since it was slow season. You can haggle a bit but they all seem to have a set price to take you from the bus station to your hotel. Once at the hotel they ask many questions about your stay and where you want to visit trying to get you to commit to them for your entire stay.

The drivers usually don't speak much English but they know enough to understand where you want to go. Only once were we taken to the wrong place. If I had to do it over again I would rent a bike to travel around Angkor Wat. It would have taken a bit longer to get to the destinations but I would have enjoyed being able to stop at all the photographic locations of my choice.

Construction Road King - Nepal

There was lots of needed road repair in Nepal. It was amazing to watch these large vehicles travel along national forest type road that were sometimes completely washed out from flooding . This particular flat bed truck had hauled a large backhoe excavator up to a location at 8500 feet where a river had completely removed the mountainous road.

Feeding the pigeons

When waking in Bhaktapur, Nepal one morning I saw this man make his daily offering to the Gods and pigeons. It was a very peaceful and comforting scene to experience. As he threw rice off his balcony, the city below began to wake up. Bells started to ring, motorcycles zoomed by and children chatted as they walked to school. Even with all the commotion the man was not distracted in the least and followed is ritual with purpose.

Lowland Trekking in Nepal

Tried to figure out what to use as a reference point to straighten this image but everything is crooked.
So I just left it as it is.

There are many different treks to choose from in Nepal. Most climb into the high alpine region where trails pass villages that dot the countryside and end high on a mountain peak. However in January, the coldest month, the treks are more limited. So after the first 10 day LangTang trek, where I was freezing most of the time, we asked Walker's Expeditions if it was possible to trek at a lower elevation for a few days. Mr. Karki, the owner, was most helpful and recommended many choices.
So after enjoying Latte Mochas for a few days at Himalayan Java in Kathmandu we headed on another trek. This time the trails were closer to the bigger villages, where at times, we could hear the familiar horn of the city bus signaling that is was about to drive around a blind corner. The trail also had us walking through backyards and along dirt roads. I missed being in the solitude of the high alpine, but not the cold nights and freezing mornings.
Today's image was captured on this lowland trek. The houses in this region were made with stucco or brick. Much different than the stone houses we saw along the other trail.

Basket of Love - Trekking in Nepal

One of the many reasons that I enjoyed my trek despite the cold temperatures

Shortly after I captured this image grandma came out of the house, rearranged the baby in the basket, covered the basket with a blanket and briskly rocked her to fast sleep in about a minute.
Taken while trekking at approx. 11,000 feet in the Himalayan Mountains, of Nepal, the temperature was about 25 F degrees.

Nepal - Blending Old and New

I was visiting the oldest temple in Nepal, the Changu Narayn Temple where some amazing wood cravings and brass work covered the Stupas there.
There were also a few people living there. In this scene the 100 year old tradition of drying the corn cobs along the eaves is combined with evidence of the new world, a motorcycle helmet. In Nepal only the driver of the motorcycle is required to wear a helmet.

A row of trees among The Killing Fields

I wrestled with this post because of the location I shot it at. Such a incredibly depressing place, The Cambodia Killing Fields, where one of my favorite flowers grow. Here, a row of flowering trees line the fields where 10,000's of people were brutally murdered after being tortured for months. I am still completely saddened and struggling with the concept that humans are capable of such cruelty. To stand on the land where human remains; teeth, bones and clothing rise to the surface on a continual bases and lie at your feet as you walk among the mass graves; I can not help but ache for those whose lives ended and for those who were being forced to end those lives. I truly believe that both, the killers and those killed, were suffering immensely under the leader, Pol Pot, who was quoted as saying, "Better to kill an innocent by mistake that to spare an enemy by mistake."

Angkor Wat, Ta Prohm Temple, Cambodia

IR processed Angkor Wat

This location is from the movie, Raiders of the Lost Ark. It is a stitched image that took about an hour to capture since there were so many tourists wanting their photo taken in front of this amazing temple, Ta Prohm.

I processed the image with the DynamicLights IR option because while in the National Museum in Phnom Pehn I saw wall size images of Angkor on the wall processed this way by John McDermott. He has some amazing photographs of the area take a look.

Cambodia Girls and Angry Birds

It is a Camera, it is a Telephone, it has the app "Angry Birds"

The iPhone on a tripod is a novelty around the world. However these girls could care less how many pixels the camera had. They were only interested if I had the app, "Angry Birds".

When I told them I had the game they looked at me with those big brown eyes and begged, "I play one minute?" It was my pleasure to let these respectful girls play for about ten minutes. No matter how far I travel children know the iPhone and they know Angry Birds!

Morning Chores

This is the only photo I paid to capture my entire trip. When I saw this lady in the morning light I just knew I had to capture it with permission.

This is just one of the scenes I saw when walking through the village of Bhaktapur in Nepal. I spent 2 nights there soaking up the history and the pulse of the culture. A must place to visit if you are in Nepal.

After adventures like this you are never quite the same. Traveling is such a wonderful experience!

Traffic in Cambodia - Not for the Weak of Heart

My favorite mode of transportation has been on the back of a motorcycle during this adventure. The warm wind in my hair, squeezed in the middle, feeling very secure. Some of my best life memories have been on a motorcycle so it doesn't surprise me in the least that I also enjoy the freedom in Cambodia.
I will later share more in detail some traffic adventures, but right now I want to post this before I head out and discover the streets of HoChiMihn.

Stone Wall Carvings at Angkor Wat

As a photographer wanting to capture the magnificence of Angkor Wat I was frustrated. There were far too many people, much too large of structure and little to no foreground. Therefore I chose to focus on the details instead. On the back of the temple I found an entire wall covered in a continuous story of carvings. To capture this panned image I moved the tripod perpendicular along the wall making sure to keep a flat angle.
I processed it using Snapseed, Artista Haiku and fx PhotoStudio.

The Day is Done - Sihanoukville City

My day began in the rain after an all night bus ride to Sihanoukville, Cambodia, I was hoping to spend a few days in the sun at the beach and the misty rain was depressing. Soon the sun came out and my spirits lifted as I took a tuktuk through the city to the white sandy beach.
I had a wonderful time enjoying the people. Even a 9 year old Cambodian girl who wished she was from Long Beach, CA got me to buy a string bracelet she made with my name on it.

After capturing this image at sunset I went back to the beach only to discover the lounge chairs and umbrellas were now replaced with BBQ's and candle lite tables. So I sat down, had a wonderful meal of prawns, shared the evening with Mark and a few cocktails.
Life is Good!

Fishing - Siem Reap, Cambodia

There are moments on trips where you just happen to be in the right place at the right time, when an opportunity presents itself.
On the way to the temple of Banteay Srei in the Angkor Heritage area yesterday, Mark saw such an opportunity. Now we just needed to ask the tuk tuk driver to turn around and have him ask the fisherman to throw his net for us.
Obviously both requests were met and we had a great photographic moment. The fisherman was friendly and grateful for the small tip. His muscular build was unusual for a Cambodian man, it was as if he worked out at a gym. However it was obvious that he worked hard at his job and that was the reason for his build.

The day at the temples was also very rewarding. More photos and stories to come!

Chong Kneas a Floating Village outside of Siem Reap, Cambodia

We only know what we know! is a saying that I am reminded of constantly. How we learn more and therefore know more is sometimes by reading, watching TV or my favorite through travel.
As I took a short boat ride down a river today to see a floating village, Chong Kneas, I was again reminded of how different people live. The village had a church, two schools and even a indoor basketball court among the many shacks that floated on the river. I thought about how many of the children on the river myst think that everyone lives just like them. "They only know what they know."
I had a hard time capturing the village on my iPhone since the boat I was traveling on was constantly moving and we didn't drive very close to the structures. I really wish I could have captured the 4 year old girl, digging deep and hard as she paddled the long boat she was in home while her older brother just sat there doing nothing.

I am so grateful that I am able to experience this wonderful adventure, so I can therefore "Know more" than I did before I started.

Had a great time in Bangkok's Chinatown yesterday. People watching was superb. So was the fresh fruit, especially the fresh pomegranate juice and mango sticky rice. Ended the day with a Thai Oil massage. Can't get much better than that. To the year of the dragon!

Load Carrying in the Himalayan Mountains

Our bodies are incredible they can do the impossible.

As I walk I have been observing men and women ages 15-70 use a tumpline (see definition below) to carry 60-90 lbs over and up steep, rocky, uneven, terrain for miles. Many pass me with a smile saying " Namaste." (the Nepalese greeting) One lady, who looked to be in her late 60's, was carrying a stack of 6 pieces of lumber 10' long. As we were passing she saw my camera, stopped, looked at me and said, "photo", requesting that I take her photo. I was surprised and delighted. So as she continue to stand with the weight on her head I repositioned her so she wasn't shaded, focused my camera and captured a few close ups. Then I showed the photos to her. She smiled, exposing her yellowed teeth and bright red swollen gums. I thanked her and we went on our way.
It fascinates me that the Nepalese can walk for miles each day back and forth moving lumber up the mountain for a small wage.

The man in the photo carried the lumber all the way up from the valley. I am amazed when watching him maneuver the long pieces round the trees and rocks. He only stops a few times along his journey when he can balance his load on some rocks. As I walk I find my steps difficult because of the loose rock and I am wearing sturdy hiking boots. I can't believe that these strong tough workers sometimes are wearing only flip flops, especially in the bitter cold.

Tumpline
/tump-lyne/ A tumpline is a strap attached at both ends to a sack, backpack, or other luggage and used to carry the object by placing the strap over the top of the head. This utilizes the spine rather than the shoulders as standard backpack straps do. Tumplines are not intended to be worn over the forehead, but rather the top of the head just back from the hairline, pulling straight down in alignment with the spine. The bearer then leans forward, allowing the back to help support the load.
Tumplines are often used to transport heavy loads across uneven terrain such as footpaths and portages. The voyageurs of the North American fur trade used tumplines exclusively to carry their cargo of pelts and rations across portages.
Backpacks for the military and recreational campers were redesigned to carry larger loads during the middle and late twentieth century, and tumplines have become less common in the developed world.

Cooking in the Himalayan Mountains

I am sitting on a bench in the sun at 12,500 ft in the foothills of Langtang Mountain Range (Himalayan Mountains) all wrapped up in two coats, long johns and a thick blanket because it is freezing. I am looking at the outside walls of the building closest to me that is spattered in yak dung. The dung is put there to dry. Then it will be pried off and used in the oven to cook and heat with.

This morning I sat in the family kitchen on a plastic stool next to the stove with mom, dad, two kids, the guide and the porter. The stove was homemade of mud and concrete and heated with wood and yak dung. There were two 4 inch in diameter holes on top of it, one was covered by a large steel teapot and the other with a pan of milk and rice for rice pudding. The kitchen was well stocked with large pots, frying pans and all the necessary table wear. I also saw dozens of fresh eggs and potatoes.

My typical meal has been:
Breakfast: ginger lemon tea always with sugar, milk coffee with sugar, scrambled egg with yak cheese, vegetables (cabbage and kale).
Lunch: ginger tea, pasta noodles , eggs, with extra vegetables and yak cheese, French fries, ketchup
Dinner: ginger tea with mashed potatoes and yak cheese, noodles with vegetables
In other words the same things all day long disguised in a variety of ways :-)

After I ate my breakfast I observed the father making Tibetan Bread, a buckwheat round flatbread that they eat with everything. First the dough is fried on both sides in a frying pan on top of the stove. Then it is browned directly on the yak dung coals turning it often with their bare hands. They were also throwing boiled bite size potatoes with or with out the skin on the coals to warm and eat directly from the fire.
It was a cozy morning, one that I felt honored to be apart of.

Himalayan Baby Bath

A moment in the Himalayan high alpine area.

Setting the scene: Mom is sitting outside in the sunshine on a concrete floor at 11,500 feet where the outside temp was 25 F degrees, if that much, holding her baby girl. There are two small plastic tubs: one filled with warm water and a plastic cup for pouring. The other empty.

The 12 month old baby girl is unwrapped from 3 layers of clothing. When the last item, a jumper, is removed mom discovers a poopy mess. So she uses the jumper to wipe the baby clean. However the mess isn't completely removed and the baby still has poop on her bottom and legs. When mom cuddles the baby to her the mess is transfer all over her dress. The bath starts by holding the babies head over the empty bucket as the warm water is poured over on her hair to wet it. Mom starts singing a lullaby. The baby fusses only a bit while mom uses a bar of soap to wash her hair. The lullaby continues as mom rinses. When the hair is completely rinsed mom sits the baby in the tub with the rinse water. The baby sits still as mom continues to wash her with the bar of soap. After being soaped up mom pours the warm water all over the baby rinsing her several times. Finally the baby is wrapped in a towel, dried and cuddled.

Welcoming in a New Year!

I had a terrific 2011 full of amazing experiences. All I have to do is look back on my blog posts to see how terrific it was. I have new friends from around the world that I communicate with on a regular basis. The communication may be through wonderful social media options, email, or chat - it doesn't seem to matter how we communicate just as long as we do.

I have traveled far and away this year. Visiting many new places, sleeping in my car, staying in hotels and sleeping in friend's spare rooms. My daughter has brought me to and picked me up from the airport more times then she can count. Thanks Suzanne!

This will be the first time I celebrate the New Year away from home. Hard to image that I will be in Kathmandu, Nepal. I wonder what I did to celebrate? (I am post dating this blog so I don't know what the future brings.) I am sure it was terrific.

I will not be posting much in the next 5 weeks as I will be traveling through different parts of Asia. This is my first trip to this continent. I am excited!!! I packed light so I can move around easily. I am in good hands as my traveling companion, Mark, has traveled to many of the places we will go and is a doctor. Always good to have one nearby.

Hope to see many of you in 2012. You just never know where I will pop up next. Cheers!

Traveling with Lonely Planet, Noteshelf and the iPad

Did you know that there are so many ways to use your iPad beyond the photography apps! I know it is hard to imagine that this wonderful device does more than help create artistic images! But it does!

Lonely Planet PDF's combined with the app Noteshelf make a great travel Journal

While preparing for my Asian adventure I was told that I could purchase PDF's of Lonely Planet books. So I went shopping at lonelyplanet.com and discovered that for $4 each I could purchase just the chapters of the locations I was planning to visit.

After downloading the PDF chapters I chose to put them in iBooks for easy referencing.
Then I thought of a great way I could use the app Noteshelf to help pre plan even more.
So I made a screen capture of the page I wanted to highlight. Opened Noteshelf and then imported my page.

Images can be imported into Noteshelf

Next I highlighted, wrote notes and added fun stamps to the page. (See first page.)
I will continue to add to my notebook as I discover more places and things I want to do and see in Kathmandu.
To have even more fun, I can add my own photographs and create a journal of my adventure as I travel.

Arrived Hong Kong Airport

I made it to Hong Kong. Slept for about 7 hours on the plane. I feel really refreshed. It was a 12.5 hour flight. Flew Cathay Pacific Airlines, great planes and crew.

What I noticed first:
The pilot said it was a clear day in Hong Kong, he must be referring to above the smog layer. It is thick and ugly.

When I got off the plane I heard Christmas music. I thought it was strange for Dec 30th. Still can hear it!

Didn't get my passport stamped since I am not leaving the airport that is a bummer.

I will connect again when I can!

tis the season for a Merry Holiday!

I hope everyone is spending time with those they love, respect and trust during this time of the year.

This Christmas is much different than those in the past for me. First of all my mom is far away traveling through the USA with her husband, currently in Texas. Second I didn't decorate my house or a tree this year - first time ever! Third I will be spending Christmas Eve and Christmas Day at my daughter, Suzanne's boyfriends house with his family.

Some traditions I hope to keep: Filling of the stockings with oranges, Santa's sack appearing on Christmas morning, and going to a movie Christmas Day in my pajamas!

Napa Valley with a touch of Autumn

There are about 400 Vineyards in Napa Valley I am told. The few that I visited I enjoyed very much. As I walked past this door I saw the incredible reflection. Being surprised that Northern California was still celebrating the colors of autumn, I had to stop and capture this image.

Was introduced to a couple new apps that I thought I would try out tonight. I captured this photo while in Chicago. While processing it I thought it looked a little holiday- ish with the happy twinkle stars! I used lots of apps and processed it on my iPhone. I was actually surprised that I liked it when I saw it on my computer monitor. Sometimes I find iPhone processed images to be muddy.

iPhone Photography - if you can dream it, you can create it!

Times Square one year ago - discovering the possibilities

Remember the days when you had to spend $99 to update Photoshop? and then you had to spend another $99 to update each 'plug in' that you used with it? Well that has all changed, at least for those of us who use applications to process our images. In the last few weeks an amazing number of apps have had incredible updates, free of charge. It truly feels like Christmas and the true spirit of giving.

I remember a short year ago dreaming of the possibility to process my images with opacity brushes, thinking how great it would be to brush and blend this way. Now many applications have that option. Before I even imagined it, I discovered an application that could remove unwanted items similar to the Photoshop's content aware ability for a mere 99 cents. Also a short time ago, I hoped for the possibility of masking with a magic wand and the ability to use layers. Today even that is possible.

Of course there are a few things I still wish for that aren't possible - yet! More ways to make selections would be one of them. I still don't see any marching ants...lol!

I am so excited that the developers have worked hard to create applications that allow us to capture and process amazing images. The possibilities are incredible, inspiring and limitless. I would like to thank them all for helping me become a better artist because of the tools I now can carry in my pocket and will soon be traveling to far and exotic places with. I will continue to dream big, knowing that there is someone hard at work and with the ability to make my dreams come true.

Less is More

I just love abandoned!

While in Northern Indiana came across this abandoned park. I love places like this and was thrilled that the front entrance was open, thanks to one of the gates that had fallen down. Upon entering I saw this wheelchair and knew this image was going to be my blog post. There were so many wonderful photographs to be captured here. I could have photographed here all day long.
I worked on processing this image last night in preparation to blog. I app'd it with many choices and combinations, however the image wasn't speaking to me. I wasn't happy and fell asleep frustrated. This morning I went in several different directions continuing to open this app and that app. However I felt that I was creating something different than what I wanted.
So I stepped way back and instead of 'apping' it. I used Filterstorm to make minor adjustments. I used the tools available to lead the viewers eye to the parts of the image that I wanted them to go.
So the lesson I was reminded of today is sometimes less is more.

Time for a hair cut

This image was captured a year ago. I decided to process it tonight with a blend of Artista Haiku and Dramatic Black and White.
It is a barber chair in the Eastern State Pen. I wonder if they ever strapped anyone in it to get their head shaved. Not a place I want to get my hair cut!

Since I travel alone much of the time, I started capturing self portraits in beautiful locations so I could show 'the family' where I was. In these images I would face the camera and smile. It was my way to say, "Hi!". My Uncle Dale influenced me to take these photos because his images always include people. He has documented fully every family gathering we have ever had and since he wasn't at 'my gathering', I thought I would help him add to his collection. That was my thought anyway.

 Soon I began to capture a different view of myself. I would position the camera to see my back or a side view as I looked out at the landscape rather than at the camera. My thought was that I wanted to become part of the scene instead of the star of the show.

 Now I take lots of self portraits with many thoughts in mind. I have begun to create collections, one I call "My Backside" and in the another I am in my Walter Mitty World. I find the process a work in self exploration.

 I had a great time creating today's image on the plane ride from Denver to Indiana. It was completely processed on the iPad. I used PhotoWizard for the filters, Filterstorm to put it together, Grungetastic for the final frame, and Snapseed for sharpening. I loved the process of trying to figure out how to accomplish what I want to do. I get all excited when I figure out how I can do the blending and cropping I want.

Today was one of those days that I am so glad to have discovered this form of artistic expression.

Goldendale Sunset

Yesterday I was driving home from the Portland area. I prefer to travel the back roads through Goldendale, WA and avoid I-5. Yesterday I stopped to capture a great image of a shack and Mt. Adams in the background. However what really caught my attention was this view. I love how the light is kissing the fields.
I used a few filters in fxPhotoStudio to add color to the otherwise blow out sun. As usual I used Blender, Filterstorm and Snapseed. I also used Dynamic Light for an extra pop.

Yesterday, I found this article in A Photo Editor, by Erik Kessels. He has a strong opinion on how worthless iPhone images are. Please read below.

Obviously, this blanket statement cannot be true since it’s never mattered what photographers used to take their pictures with but I can’t get over the feeling that pictures taken with a camera in a phone that everyone owns have no value. I think iPhone images only have value when they depict breaking news or when they are curated by someone to understand a bigger picture." ~Erik Kessels (KesselsKramer, Amsterdam)

This is my comment to his article:

At the beginning I too was a skeptic of iPhone Photography. Then I tried it and fell in love with the concept. I soon realized what an amazing device I can carry with me that captures, processes and post images. I also realize the possibilities are endless in the creativity that is added to an image. Beside the fact that they make beautiful prints.

In the past year I have learned everything I possibly could about iPhone Photography. I now travel the world with only my iPhone, iPad and have become a better artist with the iOS applications. Through my blog I help others to see the possibilities and inspire other to do the same.

Recently I was given an opportunity to be apart of Aurora Photos myPhone Collection. I am honored to be apart of it.

I am very fortunate to have discovered iPhone Photography!

One final thing... In 1984 I was owner of a software development company that wrote programs for the Personal Computer, PC. I remember a gentleman in a 3 piece suit coming up to me and saying, "A PC will never run a real business." Today I think of how some are saying, "An iPhone will never take a real photo."

There was a model shoot at Mark Hosko's house last weekend.

This is beautiful Argyro. She is fairly new to modeling. When asked to look sultry, she appeared puzzled. As the photographer began to explain, she cocked her head at him and said, "I'm Greek I don't understand sultry."
Personally I think she was born understanding.

Theme Week: One Minute From Your Front Door

There is a private Facebook Group for students of Harry Sandler and mine to use as a continued source of information for their iPhone Photography. The group is very active and produces incredible imagery. It is amazing how even though each student is primarily taught the same applications, the work is completely individual.

Last week Scooter Lowrimore proposed the idea of having a 'Theme Week". Harry and I thought it was a great idea. So Scooter posted: "The first theme is called 'Just One Minute" where the image must be taken within one minute from where you live. My idea on this theme is that we all get to know a bit more about each other's environs."

One of the negative comments I hear from critiques of iPhone Photography is how 'Anyone can do it' by just a tap of a button. I agree that many apps have wonderful filters, presets, frames or one tap buttons that create very unique looks easily, however, that is just the start of the creative possibilities.
On average I spend about an hour in just processing the images I post to this blog. That doesn't include the time it takes to capture the image or the time it has taken me to learn what the photographic applications are capable of.
Today I wanted to demonstrate how I used the applications together to create this blog image. Please keep in mind that by showing what is possible with blending and brushing you can create an artist look all of your own. It is important to understand that knowing where to find a particular tool is valuable and learned by continually practicing your craft.
Many examples of what is possible are shown during The Last-Pixel Show Workshops. Hope you can participant in one next year so you too can unleash the artistic lunatic in you! Yes it is so fun!

Every year my mom insists on taking my photo on my birthday. I have a collection of well 47 of them. My birthday was last month, my mom and I weren't together to celebrate and I failed to take my photo this year. Of course a few days after my birthday when we were talking on the phone mom asked me if I took the famous photo...I told her the truth.

Today I was getting ready for the day and decided to capture an everyday moment - putting my hair back. So hard to capture an expression that I like on my face. I must have taken 30 images changing the angle, zooming in and out, looking at the camera and away. The biggest difficulty was holding the camera still enough so the image wasn't too blurred. Always something that seems to make a difficult project seem impossible.

I finally captured one I liked. I think my mom will forgive me for being a bit tardy this year.

Colorful Canoes

During the last iPhone Photography Workshop on Whidbey Island I was on this dock with all these colorful canoes. I took several images of them first with the SlowShutter camera and then with PorHDR. Next I decided to try Hipstamatic using the Blanko film and all the lens choice I purchased. I ended up with several images of different colored boats. I also shot a John S with The BlackKey's B+W (a favorite). Today's blog image is a combo of John S and BlackKey's B+W and the Lucifer VI. I combined the images in several ways, first in Filterstorm, then with Blender. I also used Snapseed for Structure and Drama!

I was hoping to be able to use FIlterstorm to easily paint in one color but found the tonality of the image to be too similar to do an effective job. So I instead pumped up the saturation and add drama. The two frames came from Hipsta and no where else.

Blue Flower with the help of fxPhotoStudio

Some days things just look better dressed in blue. fxPhotoStudio has a great filter to add this effect. However as most of you know I am never satisfied with just adding a filter to an image. Next I used Blender. The trick was adding a gradient in Filterstorm and some dramatic light in Snapseed.

Panoramic of Cape Flattery - Snapseed Processed

Cape Flattery is not visited by many. First of all it is on the Olympic Peninsula of WA, then it is an hour drive off the main road and a mile hike to the point. However it was well worth the effort to get there. The rugged scenery is amazing. It was difficult to find a clearing in the trees big enough to capture a pano but I was diligent and found just the right spot.

Cape Flattery is the most northwestern point in the contiguous United States. The point is beautiful, rugged and peaceful.
After this trip, like so many others, I find that I have taken so many wonderful images that will never be processed. Today I decided to go back a week in the Camera Roll and found this image.

Step by Step Instructions to Creating Photo Albums on the iPad with iOS5

While Harry and I were preparing a Slideshow for the workshop we came upon an option that didn't exist until the new iOS5 upgrade, the ability to create albums. Here are step by step instructions on how to 'Add' an Album on the iPad.

While in the Camera Roll album, tap on the 'box with arrow' icon at top right.

Now select all the images you want in the 'New Album' by tapping on them. A blue check mark will appear on all the selected images.

Tap on the 'Add to' icon and then tap on 'Add to New Album'.

Type in the name of the new album and tap return.

The new album will appear at the bottom of all your albums in Photos.

If you tap on the new album 'Fort Casey Lighthouse' you can see the selected images inside. Please note the the images will still appear in the Camera Roll!

While in the 'Fort Casey Lighthouse' album, you can Share, Copy, Remove, Add to...

If you tap ' Remove' you can delete the selected images from this album only, the images will still be in the Camera Roll.

If while in the Camera Roll you select some images to delete, the images will also be deleted from all the additional albums they were added to.

The ability to create folders is great to move image that you want to keep together. I will find it helpful for processing workflows. It will also be great to have for images that I still want to process. They are also still the same resolution as the Camera Roll images.

However there are some issues that still need to be resolved to make it truly useful for photographers who process images.

If you remove all the photos from the Camera Roll the Added Albums will also disappear.
If you process the images from an album that was created, those images will be saved to the Camera Roll not back into the created album.
The added albums can not be backed up to the computer, only the Camera Roll. So you can't save the workflow albums (or other ones you created for any purpose).

iPhone Processing Options

Rosario Beach, Fidalgo Island

In preparation of The Last-Pixel Show Whidbey Island iPhone Workshop I captured the sunset on Fidalgo Island at the Rosario Beach yesterday. There is a great wind blown tree that sits up on a cliff. As the sun began to get low on the horizon I lined up the beam of light on the water with the truck of the tree. Capturing the image with ProHDR. I also processed the image in ProHDR. For the first image I used Blender to combine the layers. The final touches were processed in Snapseed.

Processed with additional apps.

For the second image I continued to process the image with Artista and combined that layer again in Blender. My final touches to the second image was done with Dynamic Light. With two additional processing steps I was able to process the image with an entirely different look.

Today after taking a ferry ride from Port Townsend to Coupeville, Harry Sandler and I checked out the classroom at the Pacific Northwest Art School for our The Last-Pixel Show Workshop. We then went scouting to Ebey's Landing, a favorite location for photography. Today the beach was full of wonderful lines. It started raining but with the iPhone that didn't stop me from shooting.
Today's image was processed on my new iPad 2 using fx PhotoStudio, Blender, Dynamic Light, Snapseed and a new app Harry shared with me this morning that we will introduce to the class.
Tomorrow we will do some more scouting. The weather is suppose to improve to 10% chance of rain.

Nik's Snapseed - a go to app

After yesterdays post I started looking through more of my images of the last drive through Zion. It seems that once I arrived in Las Vegas the next day and got the iP4S I have abandoned so many wonderful photos that deserve to be posted that I had taken with the iP4.

I hope to move more of them to my new iPad so I can start my processing workflow once again. Seems like I have been doing most of the processing lately on my iPhone because, well, it seems easier.

Today's image was processed with Snapseed, including the black and white conversion. Snapseed is becoming a favorite app now that they included sharpening and structure. I have always liked the invisible sliders and the ability to see the before and after, and of course the u-point technology. Nik has done a great job for those of us who love to process with our Apple Devices.

Autumn in Zion

The first sign of Autumn in Zion

Autumn arrived in Zion about 3 weeks late this year. So I only caught the first of the color at the end of my trip. Just before the tunnel, when coming from the east, is a great pull out where the water has craved great grooves into the sandstone. The combo of the red tree and the lines caught my attention. Miss being there...lots!

I spent the evening setting up my apps on my new iPad2. Yes I have been working on the first generation iPad all this time. I just synced it and all seems to be organized as I set it up in iTunes. Now I need to decide if I am going to update my MacBook Pro to Lion so I can start to use the iCloud. Along with that I would need to learn Pages if I want my docs to sync with iCloud. Seems there has been so many changes lately that I have been spending much of my time on updating the devices and learning about all the changes, and not enough time being creative. However I have got a few ideas I have been working on and will share with the students in the Whidbey Workshop next week...I can't wait!

Jessie, Toy Story

My daughters have always known how to have fun! We have had some crazy times together. Once we dresses up like Hillbillies and walked through Hollywood, along the Hollywood Walk of Fame and near Grauman's Chinese Theatre. Another time we styled our hair crazy with shopping bags and helium balloons, then went out to dinner to a salad bar restaurant for Mother's Day.

This morning my oldest, Suzanne, dressed up as Jessie from Toy Story for work. We had fun this morning getting her ready and braiding her hair. I took a quick shot before she left for an important one on one meeting with a VP at Expedia.
My job was having fun processing the image. I used Perfect Photo for sharpening and Posterize. Next Blender for a few layers. Then using Filterstorm to brush and blend in areas. The favorite part of processing this image was using Filterstorm's Color filter to change the mustard yellow to a bright yellow and adding the stars in fx PhotoStudio. The frame is from PhotoToaster.

Autumn still hasn't arrived in Cottage Grove

Almost Home
Stopped by my dad's for a short visit. He lives in a small town south of Eugene, OR. On the way there I took the back road looking for a scene that would say 'country'. When I was almost to his driveway I saw this.
My dad has a wonderful home that he loves. He has remodeled it, using his talents to make cabinets, drywall, tile, and even make his own pine moulding. 'My dad can do anything!' Growing up he was a fire fighter and role modeled his creative talents of being a photographer.
It was fun to spend the day showing him all that I have accomplished as an iPhone Photographer in such a short time.
Today I am driving home but first I will be belatedly celebrating my birthday with my daughter. Life is good!

iPhone Photography Workflow

Workflow
Many of the students who take my course seek to have a better understanding of workflow. There are so many apps available for capture and processing of photos but where to start.

When I look at an image I start to see it in the artistic form. One of the first things I need to decide is what layers I need to create. There are my 'go to' apps for layers. You can see by my blog that I use fxPhotoStudio and the Artista series frequently. After those layers are created, I then need to decide if I want to use the app Blender for global blending mode options and/or Filterstorm for more selective brushing and blending.

Usually I will add several elements from many different layers going back and forth from one layer to the other building on it as I go. I sometimes sharpen various layers before adding them. If I need to use the app Touch Retouch I usually do so at the end of my workflow.

The best way for me to learn is to watch others work and - try try and try again.

I love to do onsite workshops with students because it gives me an opportunity to demonstrate my workflow for the various images I have created. I can more easily explain why I made the choices I did and answer questions along the way. It is most rewarding to share that 'ah ha' moment with a student when something they have been struggling to understand is now clear.

I hope you will treat yourself to a workshop with Harry Sandler and I in the near future.

Horseshoe and the Snapseed Update

Near Page, AZ, along a warm sandy trail (yes I walked barefoot) is this incredible Horseshoe Bend view of the Colorado River. I stood a foot from the edge and placed my tripod leg just over the lip to capture this image. It was captured with ProHDR in about 12 images.
I had processed this about a week ago without success because the clouds were too blown out and no matter how I processed it the clouds continued to have white hot spots.
However today I solved my problem by thinking out of the box and mirroring the image just for the sky. Then I selectively brushed in the areas that were white hot.
When I was pleased with my result I brought the photo into Snapseed using Selective Adjust and the new Detail option for sharpening and structure. Structure as defined by Nik Software is: Enhance or reduce fine details in your images for the ultimate look.
I was happy with every part except the over sharpened clouds. Oh those clouds were difficult today!
So I used both the layer before Detail and the one after applying Detail and brushed the clouds to make them soft and fluffy again.
I was very happy with the new Detail option and am pleased that Nik Software has continued to make wonderful improvements.

iPhone 4S, iOS 5 and the iCloud - Pros and Cons

I recently returned from the wilderness of Utah and landed in Las Vegas. One of my goals was to visit an Apple Store and hopefully get the new iP4S - woohoo.

On Sunday I went to the Forum Shops on the Strip and asked if they had the iPhone 4S in stock. They said which one? I replied the 64K, black, ATT version. YES! it was available. I always buy Apple Care and was informed they had an upgrade. For $99, instead of $79, you could now have the phone replaced if it was dropped or if there is water damage for $49. Since I am one of those rare people who actually knows first hand what it is like to drop the phone in the toilet, I purchased the upgrade.... ;-) Another hint is that if you purchase the phone at Apple, instead of ATT, you only pay sales tax on the discounted price and not the full price, at least in Vegas, that saves enough money to buy some new apps!

A great feature that is offered right in the store is to have all your contacts transfered from your old phone to the new one so when you walk out you are ready to make all your calls, send messages and emails. Unfortunately since my Address Book has been, well, performing poorly for months (and not fixed after hours in the Apple Stores) the simple transfer didn't work for me. I am however happy to report that after 8 hours of manually moving each contact one by one I know have 293 contacts merged and updated! ;-)

I am also happy to report that after syncing the new phone with iTunes I have started to organize my 307 apps into folders. However I am not close to being done. I will work on that more later today. My iPad is a mess too, ugh!

So how do I like the the new 8mp camera? Well sadly I have nothing to personally report YET! Harry Sandler has done some great testing and so have many others. There are many great reviews and I am so so glad that I have it. I am sure I will get out this afternoon and at least take one photo!

So what have I been doing beside organizing my apps and contacts? Well I went to a class at the Apple Store to learn more about the iCloud. I was hoping to find out what happens after you take 1001+ images in 30 days or less, since the iCloud only holds 1000 photos. Many employees have heard what may or may not happen but none had actually done the testing themselves. So I don't know what happens. I do know that in order to use the iCloud properly, you must first set up the iCloud on your computer. If you have a PC you can go directly to the iCloud. sign in and be ready to move to your iPhone (3gs or higher) and your iPad. However if your computer is a Mac you must first install Lion to get the iCloud to work properly. So, this girl will not be using iCloud at this time. Why? well, first of all I don't have my time machine backup (just in case), I really don't have any need for iCloud at this time, and the complications it may or may not cause I really don't have time for.

What else have I been doing? I have updated my old iPhone 4 to iOS 5 hoping that would solve my problem with my contacts (it didn't). I have updated my iPad to iOS 5. Then I discovered that many of my favorite photography apps are not updated to iOS 5 yet and either crash or are not saving as a high resolution image. Hipstamatic is one that is saving at only 1200x1200 pixels. Transfer, my favorite app to move my photos from one device to another crashes. However the most important thing I have discovered is that it was necessary to make sure each and every one of my apps setting is changed to save the photos in high resolution. Thank goodness that each app is acting as if I am opening it for the first time and therefore I am reminded that I need to make these changes. So please make sure you are saving your photos in high resolution by making changes to each app in 'Settings' on the iPhone and in each of your apps where appropriate.

Ok so for some good, great and terrific news! I love Siri!!! It is fun just to have a conversation with her or him. I have asked some of the silly questions. "What am I hungry for?" "How old am I?" "Where do you live?" -- try your own it is quite entertaining. For more productive work it is great to be able to talk a text message or an email. Love adding reminders and appointments. I even asked it to find the Apple Store the other day and the map came right up...so awesome. I think 'Hal' is alive and well! on his way to face recognition, and soon to be capable of reading lips!

So after the short time I have actually been using my new iPhone 4S with iOS 5 and without the iCloud, I must say I am excited to continue moving forward with this technology. It is difficult to purposefully jump into hours and hours of reorganizing and discovery, but I willing do so because I truly believe the vision of Steve Jobs and many like him will make our lives so much better in the end.

I am now off to take a few images. I will post soon!

Desert Hearts - Intro to Pixel Blend

Something I truly believe and remind myself often is - "A lot can happen in a year!" Last year at this time I was on the east coast by myself traveling in a rental car along the Blue Ridge Parkway. After following the BRP from VA to TN I spent a few days in the Smokey Mountains. It was suppose to be in full autumn splendor but instead the frost had quickly turned the leaves brown. So Instead of capturing the reds, oranges and yellows of Autumn I headed to the coast. My goal was to see the snow geese and walk along the beach.

If you have never seen snow geese take off, fly and land in a flock of 1000 or so, I highly recommend you put it on your list. The sight and sound of it is incredible.

One of the last things I did before leaving the Delaware beaches is to draw a heart in the sand and capture it with the Hipstamatic camera app. Shortly thereafter I processed the image and printed it on canvas as it was one of my favorites.

A year later I am walking along a dry river bed in Utah and found a bright red rock that crumbed in my hand. The crumbs were soft and clay like. I thought of how the Native Americans may have used it as dye or something to draw with. So I drew a heart of red on a sand colored rock and captured it with the Hipstamatic.

Today thinking of my favorite saying, "All you need is Love" I created this image.

I am very fortunate to have so much love in my life and I wanted to express that appreciation!

Colors of the Grand Staircase

The story continues through the grand Staircase Wilderness....
After we made it relatively easily through the puddle, we had another 15 miles to Escalante. We had climbed canyons, crossed rivers and plowed our way through muddy puddles - nothing could stop us now.

That is when we saw a big white Dodge Ram truck coming towards us, the first car we had seen along the 74 miles. The driver of the truck was signaling for us to stop. I figured he wanted to know the road conditions. We both rolled down our windows. It was the ranger wanting to know where we came from and when. We gave him a brief description of our adventure and expected to continue driving on our merry way when he said, "You can't go any farther." I laughed, didn't he realize all the obstacles we already past? He suggested we go back which was impossible since we knew we couldn't go up the steep wet sandy river bank we slide down into the river bed about 20 miles back.

That is when he offered to help us go through the 10-12 areas of quick sand that we had to pass through in the wash. I again thought it couldn't be that bad. The first area we came to needed a little digging out so we didn't bottom out as we drove through the rutted road. We also need to stay right away from the undermined wash out on the left side of the road. Piece of cake!

A mile or two later we came to a long deep rutted area of wet sloppy sand. Lots of digging need here. The ranger suggested we try another road. So we followed him to another river bed. This area was wetter and deeper. Hummmm!!! He then drove his truck back and forth trying to dry out the river bed for us. He was doing a fine job until he drove a little to the left and buried the truck up the the axle as he tried to maneuver out of the hole he got himself in.

That is when we decided it would be much smarter to spend the night in the wilderness again and hope the wash dries out a bit.

So we set up camp on a flat rock looking down valley to a gorgeous view and built a camp fire.

The next day the ranger arrived and we had to dig out a bit and drive through another large mud puddle but pretty much we drove out relatively easy. The car is dirty up to the windows and we both needed a shower but we were 'rescued'!!!

Adventure with the Cats

After spending two nights in the Grand Staircase I began to see faces in the rock formations!

The last three days were full of adventure and beauty. As I am typing this I am trying to remember it all. On Saturday morning woke up at 5am to capture the sunrise on the north rim of the Grand Canyon at Cape Royal.
We then traveled to Page, AZ stopping at a few sites along the way including Horseshoe Point. After Page we decided to take the short route that also looked more adventurous because it was a gravel/dirt road from Big Water to Escalante.
As soon as we got off the highway we were treated with amazing rock formations and wonderful dark clouds. About 10 miles into the canyon we looked ahead wondering where the road could possible go and discovered it was straight up the canyon wall. So fun. The BMW performed wonderfully as we climbed the rocky rutted road. At the top we stopped to take a few photos. I wish we would have on the way up as the car was climbing up a road that would have been hard to walk up.
As we reached the plateau, the sun was about to set and the cloud formations were incredible. We actually pointed our cameras to the sky wanting to just capture the unsettled ocean wave like clouds of steel blue color. (very surreal). That was only the start of the light show. When the sun hit the horizon and then for 30 minutes afterwards, the reds, oranges and yellows danced around us. As we were capturing the beauty in one direction the brillance would appear in another direction. It was a photographers dream.
Even though it was dusk we continued to drive hoping to reach Escalante before bedtime. The road continued to be rough in spots and at times we were crossing river beds some with water, other that were dry. One particular difficult crossing dipped low quickly into wet sand and rock before entering the river bed. We knew that once we dropped down and crossed the river we would not be able to turn back.
It was dark when we came to a 'T' in the road and the signs said that we would reach Escalante either way. We took the fork to the left and travelled another 45 minutes until we reached a puddle in the middle of the road that look long and deep. Too deep to be stuck in all night long. So we backed up and parked a little off the road finding a place to call home for the night.
The adventure continued in the morning as we once approached the puddle which I now called a lake ( sounded much more dramatic that way). I got my Iphone out and decided this moment had to be video taped. I just knew this was the end of the adventure and would need a tow from a good Samaritan that would hopefully drive by shortly.
As Mark gunned it through the lake, water was spraying everywhere. Somehow I didn't get wet at he flew by. I was laughing so hard as he drove by reaching dry ground. Home free, we would be in Escalante before lunch.

The Grand Canyon North Rim

An Early Sunrise

On the drive to the north rim of the Grand Canyon it was long after sunset and snowing, sometimes heavily. Another adventure. When we arrived, Mark and I asked lots of questions to where the best location for sunrise would be. The choices seemed limited, more so than the south rim anyways. The trail we chose followed the rim from the campground to the lodge. So we drove to the camp ground - a first for this trip - and followed the nightly ritual of moving all the gear from the back to the front. The main difference was the temperature, a very cold 24 degrees.
The alarm went off at 5am and as usual it is very difficult to get out of bed when it is cold and dark outside. But we did it. The funny thing was neither one of us had gloves so we used an extra pair of socks.
The sunrise was wonderful and we chose many locations to capture its magnificence as the clouds danced in the sky.

Good Morning World

I have been doing a lot of traveling lately in my BMW X5. I took my first road trip in it to Banff and Jasper National Park, Canada in 2004.
Currently I am in Utah traveling throughout the Southwest looking for photographic locations. The great part of car camping is that I can and do park in wonderful locations. A few mornings ago I woke to this incredible scene.
The best part is that I arrived to this location on BLM land at dark and had no idea that I would be waking up to such an incredible view.
It rained hard yesterday and I spent my day trying to find an wifi hotspot that wasn't packed with people. Finally had to go to St George about 30 minutes from Zion.

Today I am on my way to the Grand Canyon North Rim. Hope to stay connected so I can continue to blog but also looking forward to just enjoying the views that this incredible land provides.

Autumn in New Hampshire October 5th 2010

There have been many events that have affected my life. The birth of my daughters is the most impacting. However a year ago, the day I captured this image with my iP4 was a Ah-Ha moment that I will never forget.

I now teach what is photographically possible with this incredible device that I can hold in my hand. I am honored and thrilled to do so.

Today as I prepare this blog I read that Steve Jobs has died. I am very sad. Tears are flowing as I type this. The man who impacted my life so significantly is no longer with us. He was a wonderful role model in so many ways. I am very grateful that he never settled.

I look forward to another year with the iPhone 4S, that will be released October 14th... A lot can happen in a year! - so grateful for technology and visionaries!!!

Bodie Hotel

If you ever have a chance to visit Bodie, CA, a Ghost mining town near Mono Lake, GO! It was so much fun to explore. The downside is that it is a State Park that has crazy hours of 9am-6pm, so NO sunrise or sunset images.

This image was captured through the window. It is the inside of the Bodie Hotel. The beauty of the iPhone is that you can press it flat onto the dirty glass and all the reflections disappear.

I was very surprised to see the decor in the Ladies Restroom yesterday. Lucy and Ricky make a great pair!

I have spent the last two days in Starbucks working on class materials and organizing images for a large download. I ca't wait to get out and enjoy the great outdoors tomorrow in Bodie, CA and Mono Lake! Might be a day or two before I blog but the image will be worth the wait! Lesson One - Playing with Apps

The sunset tonight was fantastic. I captured it with ProHDR hand held because I didn't have time to set up my tripod. After dinner, while sitting in McD's where I could get internet, I started processing the image.

My traveling companion, Mark Hosko, has watched me process my images over the last few months and has offered artist advice when asked, but he has never apped an image himself. Until tonight.

I was asking his advice on some simple contrast and saturation techniques to use in Filterstorm that he might use in Photoshop and handed him my iPad so he could show me 'what he would do'. (Actually it was a sneaky way to get him to prepare my blog post while I worked on other things.) Two hours later, after 'playing' in Filterstorm, fxPhotoStudio and Blender, he took the image in a "direction that I wouldn't normally have gone."

I really enjoyed watching him make creative choices and introduce more possibilities along the way. It is always fun to show off the capabilities that the apps have.

The Journey Begins

On the road again. I am staying in the Portland area for the next few days and preparing for a 3 week trip to Utah. I am planning to capture the changing season.

FYI - My posts may be a bit sporadic while traveling due to the possible unavailability of wifi.

This image was captured in February early in the morning. It is one of my favorites.
It has been a long time since I processed it. I can tell I used PhotoForge and fxPhotoStudio. I think it was one of the first images I processed using Filterstorm when I was learning the power of blending with the opacity brush.
